Comprehensive Guide on DPF, EGR, and SCR Systems in Diesel Engines | Electronic Repair Egypt3/10/2023 The evolution of diesel engine technology has been heavily influenced by the necessity to reduce emissions and align with global standards like the Euro standard. Modern diesel engines incorporate advanced systems designed specifically for pollution control. This article provides a comprehensive insight into three pivotal technologies: Exhaust-gas recirculation (EGR), Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR). Exhaust-gas Recirculation (EGR) EGR, short for exhaust-gas recirculation, plays a critical role in curbing NOx emissions. After combustion, a portion of the burned gas remains within the cylinder, which can be regulated through precise valve-timing. Additionally, an EGR valve can redirect some of this exhaust gas back into the engine's intake side, often after cooling. This method operates on three primary mechanisms:
Diesel Particulate Filter Technology (DPF) A pioneer in air pollution reduction, the DPF technology is designed to absorb particulate matter (soot) resulting from incomplete combustion. Made primarily from a honeycomb ceramic body, the DPF is adept at capturing these soot particles. An integrated ECU monitors the deposited soot and can, if required, incinerate the soot within the filter by elevating exhaust temperatures. However, DPF systems can sometimes falter when a vehicle is stuck in traffic, leading to lower engine RPMs. SCR Principle: Demystifying the AdBlue System The innate energy superiority of diesel over gasoline has popularized it as a preferred fuel. Nevertheless, diesel combustion is not without its environmental challenges. Enter the Selective Catalytic Reduction system (SCR). Designed to mitigate NOx emissions post-combustion, SCR uses AdBlue or DEEF (Diesel Engine Exhaust Fluid) solution as its catalyst. While SCR is the technology, AdBlue serves as the reactive solution, working in tandem with components like catalysts, the AdBlue injector, control systems, and measurement/spray systems.
