What Is the ATE MK26 ABS Unit? The ATE MK26 is a widely used ABS/ESP (Electronic Stability Program) unit that monitors and adjusts your vehicle's braking and stability system. It’s designed to prevent wheel lockup and improve control during emergency stops or slippery conditions. These units are found in multiple vehicles, including Mercedes-Benz, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Honda models.
Common ATE MK26 ProblemsThe ATE MK26 is built to be durable, but various factors can cause it to malfunction. Here’s a breakdown of the most common issues you may encounter:
  1. Malfunctioning Pump Motor
    • Symptoms: The pump motor in the ABS unit can fail, leading to ineffective braking performance. You may hear strange noises or experience a lack of braking power during emergency stops.
    • Solution: A pump motor replacement or repair will resolve this issue.
  2. Pressure Sensor Problem
    • Symptoms: Inaccurate pressure readings can lead to sudden braking issues, as the system struggles to maintain proper hydraulic pressure.
    • Solution: Replacing the pressure sensor will restore proper functionality.
  3. Wheel Sensor Error Messages
    • Symptoms: Various error codes related to the wheel sensors might pop up on your dashboard. These errors are often linked to faulty or dirty sensors, which interfere with the system’s ability to detect wheel speed and adjust braking accordingly.
    • Solution: Cleaning or replacing the faulty wheel sensors can correct this issue.
  4. No Communication with the ABS Control Unit
    • Symptoms: If you lose communication with the ABS control unit, you’ll likely see a warning light on your dashboard. This could indicate a wiring issue, control unit failure, or software glitch.
    • Solution: Reflashing or reprogramming the control unit, along with checking wiring connections, typically resolves this problem.

Error Codes Associated with ATE MK26 ABS Units

When your ATE MK26 unit encounters a malfunction, your vehicle may display specific diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). Here are the most common ones, along with their potential causes and fixes:
Mercedes-Benz (ESP System)
  • 5001: Control unit N30/4 (Electronic Stability Program control unit), internal fault.
    • Cause: Fault within the ESP control unit.
    • Solution: This issue may require internal repair or replacement of the control unit.
Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep
  • C2200: Antilock brake module internal fault.
    • Cause: Fault within the ABS control module, often caused by electrical issues or damage to internal components.
    • Solution: Repair or replacement of the module is usually necessary.
  • C2116: ABS Pump Motor Supply Low Voltage.
    • Cause: Low voltage to the pump motor, possibly due to a weak battery, wiring issue, or motor failure.
    • Solution: Inspect battery, wiring, and replace pump motor if required.
Honda
  • 52-01: ABS pump motor relay open circuit.
    • Cause: The relay responsible for controlling the ABS pump motor may be damaged or disconnected.
    • Solution: Checking and replacing the relay should solve this problem.

How to Fix These Problems

If you're experiencing any of these issues, here are steps you can take to fix them:
  1. Diagnose the Problem: Always start by scanning the ABS unit for error codes. This will give you a clearer idea of the specific problem affecting your unit.
  2. Perform Visual Inspections: Check for any visible issues such as broken wires, dirty sensors, or leaking fluid.
  3. Component Repair or Replacement: Once the specific problem is identified, you can repair or replace the faulty part, whether it’s the pump motor, pressure sensor, or control unit.
  4. Reprogramming the Control Unit: In some cases, a software reflash or update may be necessary to restore communication between the ABS unit and the rest of the vehicle's systems.
  5. Professional Repair Services: For more complex problems like internal faults within the control unit, it’s best to consult a specialized automotive technician who can properly diagnose and fix the issue.
