NOx Emissions Exceeded Troubleshoot AdBlue & SCR Systems

The engine control unit (ECU) monitors the amount of AdBlue injected and compares it with NOx conversion efficiency. In a fully functional system, the ratio is 1. If too much AdBlue is required, the factor increases, and when it reaches 1.49 or higher, the warning and shutdown scenario is activated.

What Happens When the NOx Emission Limit is Exceeded?
When the system detects that NOx emissions have exceeded the limit, a series of actions are triggered:
  • Check Control Message:
    A warning light appears on the dashboard, alerting the driver. Simultaneously, an error log is recorded in the ECU.
  • Remaining Range:
    The vehicle will display how far it can be driven before the engine is restricted from starting. If the issue is not resolved within this range, the vehicle will be immobilized.
  • Reset and Delete Errors:
    The error can only be cleared if the SCR system functions correctly again, typically after performing a conditioning drive.

    Low pressure in the dosing line or insufficient AdBlue levels can cause errors.

Troubleshooting the SCR System and AdBlue Issues
If your vehicle displays a NOx warning or shutdown scenario, follow these troubleshooting steps to fix the issue:
  1. Check AdBlue Quality:
    Test the quality of AdBlue using a refractometer. The ideal urea concentration is between 31.8% and 33.3%. Anything below 31.8% may cause system malfunction, and values above 33.3% indicate a loss of water content.
  2. Refill the SCR Active Tank:
    Ensure the AdBlue tank is full and perform the SCR refill detection via the diagnostic system if needed.
  3. Reset the Adaptation Factor:
    The long-term adaptation factor of AdBlue must be reset to restore system balance.
  4. Conduct a Conditioning Drive:
    Drive the vehicle at a constant speed of 70-90 km/h for an hour to allow the SCR system to recalibrate. If successful, the NOx conversion will improve, and the warning light will disappear.
  5. Clear the Error Log:
    After successfully troubleshooting the issue, use a diagnostic tool to clear the error log.

Regular maintenance of your vehicle's SCR system and AdBlue quality is vital for avoiding unexpected shutdowns. Additionally, ensure that your vehicle's NOx sensors and dosing modules are working correctly to meet emissions standards and prevent costly repairs.

The system can be sensitive to temperature and pressure. AdBlue freezes at -11°C, so the vehicle must maintain adequate tank insulation, especially in colder climates.
