Understanding and Resolving DTC Codes P0065, P0066, and P0067
If you're reading this, chances are your vehicle's check engine light has come on, and you're staring at diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) P0065, P0066, or P0067. These codes might seem confusing, but don’t worry! In this guide, we'll break down what these codes mean, what might be causing them, and how you can fix them. all in a way that's easy to understand.
These DTC codes are related to the air-assisted injector control circuit—a system that ensures accurate fuel delivery by warming the air-assisted injector to its optimal operating temperature.
  • P0065 - Air Assisted Injector Control Range/Performance
Indicates the air-assisted injector is operating outside its normal range due to a circuit issue.
  • P0066 - Air Assisted Injector Control Circuit Low
Points to the injector receiving insufficient voltage, impacting its functionality.
  • P0067 - Air Assisted Injector Control Circuit High
Occurs when the injector is receiving excessive voltage, which can lead to damage.

What Causes These DTC Codes?
Several factors can trigger these codes, including:
  1. Faulty Air-Assisted Injector
Wear, contamination, or damage may prevent it from heating properly.
  2. Damaged Control Valve
A malfunctioning valve may disrupt fuel flow to the injector, affecting its performance.
  3. Short Circuit
Damaged wires or connectors can cause excessive voltage, damaging the injector.
  4. Open Circuit
A broken wire or connector may interrupt voltage supply, rendering the injector inoperative.
  5. PCM Issues
A malfunctioning Powertrain Control Module (PCM) might mismanage the injector circuit.

Symptoms of DTC Codes P0065, P0066, and P0067
Here’s what you might notice if these codes are present:
  • Check Engine Light (CEL): The dashboard's CEL will light up.
  • Reduced Engine Performance: Lower power and slower acceleration.
  • Rough Idling: Uneven engine operation while stopped.
  • Stalling: The engine may cut out unexpectedly.
  • Decreased Fuel Efficiency: Poor miles per gallon (MPG).
  • Emissions Problems: Higher pollutant levels or failed emissions tests.
  • Hard Starting: Especially noticeable when the engine is cold.

How to Diagnose These Codes?
Diagnosing these codes requires professional expertise. Here’s what typically happens during the diagnostic process:
  1. Scan Tool Analysis
A technician uses a diagnostic scanner to read the DTC codes and gather data.
  2. Visual Inspection
Wires, connectors, and components of the air-assisted injector control circuit are checked for visible damage.
  3. Circuit Testing
Voltage, resistance, and continuity tests ensure the circuit is functioning correctly.
  4. Injector and Control Valve Check
Components are tested for wear, contamination, or mechanical failure.
  5. PCM Evaluation
The technician checks the PCM for software updates or faults.

Solutions for DTC Codes P0065, P0066, and P0067
Once diagnosed, the following steps may be taken to resolve the issue:
  • Replace Faulty Components:
The air-assisted injector or control valve may need replacement if damaged.
  • Repair Wiring Issues:
Fix short circuits, open circuits, or damaged connectors.
  • Update or Reprogram PCM:
In some cases, updating the PCM software may resolve the issue.
  • Clean or Replace Injectors:
Cleaning or replacing contaminated injectors can restore functionality.

Preventing Future Issues
To avoid encountering these codes again:
  1. Regular Maintenance:
    Follow your vehicle's maintenance schedule.
  2. Inspect Wiring:
Periodically check for damage or wear.
  3. Use Quality Fuel:
    High-quality fuel reduces contamination risks.
