Turbocharger Damage Causes and Solutions
Turbochargers are integral to maximizing engine performance by boosting air intake and increasing power output. However, when they malfunction, it can lead to severe engine issues and costly repairs. In this guide, we’ll explore the common causes of turbocharger damage, signs of malfunction, and maintenance tips to help you avoid expensive repairs and keep your engine running smoothly.
What Causes Turbocharger Damage?
  1. Oil Supply Issues: Turbochargers rely on a steady flow of clean oil for lubrication. Blocked or clogged oil supply lines, often caused by oil sludge or coking, can lead to insufficient oil reaching the turbo. This results in the bearings overheating and eventually causes turbo failure. It’s essential to replace oil supply lines and conduct an oil change whenever replacing a turbocharger to prevent repeated failures.
  2. Glow Plug System Errors: Issues with the glow plug system can indirectly cause turbocharger damage. A malfunctioning glow plug system or a faulty cooling water thermostat may clog the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), which impacts the boost pressure regulation. This can lead to cold start problems, engine power loss, or exhaust system overheating.
  3. Crankcase Ventilation Blockage: A blocked crankcase ventilation system can cause pressure buildup, leading to oil being retained in the turbocharger’s bearings. When this oil overheats, it accelerates wear and tear. Ensuring the crankcase ventilation system is working properly is crucial to maintaining turbo health.
  4. Cooling System Failures: Defective thermostats, especially in Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) systems, can prevent the engine from reaching optimal operating temperatures. If the engine doesn't warm up properly, it can prevent DPF regeneration, causing oil to overheat in the turbocharger’s bearings and leading to premature failure.
  5. Foreign Particles in the Turbocharger: Foreign particles entering the turbo can cause severe damage to the compressor wheel and the axial bearing. This is especially true for certain engine models like the N47TUE. If there is evidence of metal particles in the oil filter housing, it’s often a sign that an engine replacement is necessary.

Symptoms of a Failing Turbocharger
  • Loss of Power: A noticeable drop in engine performance is often the first sign of a turbo issue. The car may struggle to accelerate, and you’ll experience less power overall.
  • Excessive Exhaust Smoke: White, blue, or black smoke from the exhaust indicates burning oil, a common symptom of turbo damage.
  • Whining Noise: A high-pitched whining or grinding sound coming from the engine could be a sign of worn turbocharger bearings.
  • Check Engine Light: Turbocharger problems often trigger error codes related to boost pressure, the glow plug system, or the DPF.

Turbocharger Maintenance Tips
Proper maintenance can significantly extend the life of your turbocharger and prevent costly repairs. Here are some essential tips:
  1. Regular Oil Changes: Ensure that engine oil and oil filters are replaced according to your vehicle’s maintenance schedule. Clean oil is vital for the longevity of the turbo’s bearings.
  2. Check the Glow Plug System: Always address any glow plug system errors promptly, as unresolved issues can lead to more severe problems, including turbo damage.
  3. Inspect the Cooling System: Ensure that your vehicle’s thermostats are functioning correctly to maintain proper engine temperatures. Overheating or failure to reach operating temperatures can damage both the DPF and turbo.
  4. Avoid Foreign Particles: Whenever replacing a turbocharger, visually inspect the compressor wheel and the entire charge air system. Clean out any debris or metal fragments to prevent engine damage.
  5. Don’t Use Liquid Sealants: When connecting oil lines, avoid liquid sealants as they can block oil passages, leading to improper lubrication.

​Special Considerations for Specific Engine Models
  • M47T2 Engines: These engines are prone to repeated turbocharger failures. A blocked crankcase ventilation system can lead to oil overheating in the turbo’s bearings. Always check and clean the crankcase ventilation system during turbo replacement.
  • N57X Engines: For this engine model, clogged oil supply lines and DPF regeneration issues are common causes of turbo failure. Make sure to initiate DPF regeneration after any turbo repair.
  • Bx7 / Nx7 / W16 Engines: Newer turbocharger designs in these engines require filling the oil supply line with fresh engine oil during installation. Avoid using additives, as they are only necessary for older turbo designs like those found in Mx7 engines.
