Peugeot Citroen Fault Codes P2200, P220A2, and U029D Explained
If you own a Peugeot or Citroen vehicle, you might have encountered fault codes such as P2200, P220A2, or U029D. These codes often relate to issues with the Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) sensors, which are crucial for monitoring and reducing harmful emissions. As regulations become stricter, accurate NOx measurement is essential to comply with Euro 4, Euro 5, and Euro 6 emission standards.
This article will explain these fault codes in detail, why NOx sensors are vital, common symptoms of failure, and how to fix these issues.

What is a NOx Sensor?
A NOx sensor is a vital component in modern vehicles, especially those with diesel engines. It measures the levels of nitrogen oxides (NOx) emitted by the engine. The NOx sensor plays a critical role in the vehicle's Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system, which reduces harmful emissions and ensures compliance with environmental regulations. NOx sensors are common in vehicles that meet Euro 4, Euro 5, and Euro 6 standards, including many Citroen and Peugeot models.

Why Are NOx Sensors Used?
In recent years, diesel engines have become more popular due to their efficiency and lower CO2 emissions compared to gasoline engines. However, they emit higher levels of NOx, a significant contributor to air pollution and smog. To mitigate these emissions, vehicles are equipped with SCR systems that use NOx sensors to monitor exhaust gases and optimize the injection of urea, which breaks down NOx into harmless nitrogen and water.

Location of NOx Sensors in Vehicles
In a typical SCR system, NOx sensors are positioned at two critical points:
  1. Upstream of the SCR Catalyst: This sensor measures the NOx levels directly from the engine's exhaust to determine the necessary amount of urea injection.
  2. Downstream of the SCR Catalyst: This sensor monitors the efficiency of the catalyst by measuring the NOx levels after the exhaust has passed through the SCR system.
These sensors work together to ensure that NOx emissions are kept within permissible limits, protecting both the vehicle's engine and the environment.

Why Do NOx Sensors Fail?
NOx sensors can fail for various reasons, often without warning. Common causes of failure include:
  • Normal Wear and Tear: Over time, NOx sensors can degrade due to exposure to high temperatures and contaminants in the exhaust gases.
  • Electrical Issues: Faulty wiring or poor electrical connections can cause sensor failures or incorrect readings.
  • Contamination: Oil, coolant, or other substances can contaminate the sensor, leading to malfunction.
Like other consumable parts, such as engine oil or filters, NOx sensors have a limited lifespan and will need replacement after extended use.

Symptoms of NOx Sensor Failure
If a NOx sensor fails, you may notice one or more of the following symptoms:
  • Check Engine Light: The most common indicator of a NOx sensor problem is the illumination of the check engine light on your dashboard.
  • Reduced Engine Performance: A faulty NOx sensor can lead to decreased engine efficiency and power output.
  • Increased Fuel Consumption: Malfunctioning NOx sensors can cause the engine to burn more fuel than usual.
  • Failed Emissions Test: If your vehicle has a defective NOx sensor, it may not pass an emissions test, as it could be emitting higher levels of NOx than allowed.

Common Peugeot Citroen NOx Sensor Fault Codes
Understanding specific fault codes can help diagnose and resolve NOx sensor issues. Here are some common fault codes related to NOx sensors in Peugeot and Citroen vehicles:
  • P2200: NOx Sensor Circuit Bank 1
This code indicates a malfunction in the NOx sensor circuit of Bank 1, often due to sensor failure or wiring issues.
  • P220A2: NOx Sensor Electrical Supply, Voltage Too Low
This code suggests that the NOx sensor is not receiving sufficient voltage, which could be caused by electrical problems or a faulty sensor.
  • U029D00: Communication with NOx Sensor Has a Malfunction
This code means there is a loss of communication with the NOx sensor, which might indicate a sensor or network fault.
  • U029D: Fault in Communication with the DeNOX System
Similar to U029D00, this code points to communication issues within the vehicle's DeNOX system, possibly due to sensor failure or wiring problems.

How to Fix NOx Sensor Fault Codes
Addressing these fault codes typically involves one of the following steps:
  1. Replace the NOx Sensor:
If diagnostic tests confirm that the NOx sensor is faulty, replacing the sensor is often the most effective solution. It's important to replace the entire sensor unit, including the probe, to ensure accurate readings and compliance with emission standards.
  2. Check Electrical Connections:
Inspect the wiring and connectors associated with the NOx sensor. Repair any damaged wires or loose connections to restore proper communication and functionality.
  3. Reset the ECU:
After replacing the sensor or repairing wiring issues, use an OBD-II scanner to reset the vehicle's Engine Control Unit (ECU) and clear any stored fault codes.

NOx sensors play a crucial role in maintaining your Peugeot or Citroen vehicle's performance and environmental compliance. Understanding fault codes like P2200, P220A2, and U029D can help you quickly diagnose and address NOx sensor issues. Regular maintenance and timely replacement of faulty NOx sensors will ensure your vehicle runs efficiently and meets emission standards.
