How to Reset ISN on BMW 8HP G Series Transmission
When dealing with BMW’s advanced 8HP G Series transmission, sometimes you need to reset the ISN (Individual Serial Number) — especially after replacing the transmission control module or engine ECU. The ISN acts as a security handshake between the engine and transmission modules. If they don’t match, the car won’t start, or you’ll encounter limp mode.
What Is ISN and Why Does It Matter?
The ISN is a unique code programmed into both the engine control unit (DME) and transmission control module (EGS). Its purpose? To make sure these systems trust each other and communicate securely. A mismatch means immobilizer faults, no engine start, or transmission errors.
So, after installing a new or reconditioned transmission module, syncing the ISN is critical.

Tools You’ll Need:
  • ESYS software (for reading and coding ECUs)
  • Tool32 (for direct ECU commands)
  • A reliable ICOM interface or compatible BMW diagnostic tool
  • A laptop with stable power supply (to avoid interruptions)

Step-by-Step Guide: Resetting ISN on 8HP G Series Transmission
Step 1: Connect to the Vehicle Using ESYS
  • Launch ESYS and connect via your diagnostic interface.
  • Read the vehicle’s modules to load data.
  • Navigate to the DME (engine ECU) and EGS (transmission ECU) modules.
Step 2: Retrieve ISN from Engine ECU (DME)
  • In ESYS, locate the coding or adaptation section of the DME.
  • Note down the current ISN value. This is the number you'll program into the EGS.
Step 3: Retrieve ISN from Transmission ECU (EGS)
  • Similarly, check the ISN in the transmission ECU.
  • Usually, this value will be different or missing if the module was replaced.
Step 4: Open Tool32 and Load the EGS Module
  • Start Tool32 on your laptop.
  • Load the specific EGS module program, usually named something like EGS8HP.prg.
  • Connect Tool32 to the vehicle’s interface and select the EGS module.
Step 5: Read Current ISN in EGS
  • Run this command in Tool32:
    DO "$EgS_GetISN"
  • Confirm the current ISN.
Step 6: Write the Correct ISN to EGS
  • Using the ISN retrieved from the DME, write it into the EGS:
    DO "$EgS_SetISN" <ISN>
  • Replace <ISN> with the actual serial number. For example:
    DO "$EgS_SetISN" 12345678
Step 7: Verify the New ISN
  • Run the read command again:
    DO "$EgS_GetISN"
  • Make sure the EGS now shows the same ISN as the engine ECU.
Step 8: Finalize Changes in ESYS
  • Return to ESYS.
  • Perform coding or FA write for both DME and EGS to finalize the process.
  • Clear any fault codes.
  • Cycle the ignition to reboot systems.

Why Following These Steps Matters
Resetting the ISN correctly ensures that your BMW’s engine and transmission communicate flawlessly. Ignoring this step or making mistakes can lead to immobilizer errors, limp mode, or worse — a no-start condition. This guide guarantees you avoid those pitfalls by taking a professional approach.
