How to Reset BMW EGS ISN for GA6HP26Z & GA6HP19Z Using Tool32 – Complete Professional Guide
If you're working on a BMW transmission swap or retrofitting a used EGS module, resetting the ISN (Individual Serial Number) is a crucial step. Many technicians rely on aftermarket tools, but if you’re working with BMW Standard Tools, there's a powerful solution built right into your software suite: Tool32.
This guide walks you through the exact method to reset the ISN on BMW GA6HP19Z and GA6HP26Z transmission modules using Tool32 — no fluff, just real-world procedures used by professional auto technicians.

What Is the ISN and Why Reset It?

The ISN (Individual Serial Number) is the unique cryptographic code that secures communication between the DME (engine ECU) and EGS (transmission control unit). When replacing a used EGS, the ISN from the previous car doesn't match the current DME, which causes immobilizer issues and no-start problems.
Resetting the ISN allows you to re-link the EGS to your vehicle’s ECU, making it essential for used module retrofits, cloning, or advanced tuning projects.

Tools and Requirements
To perform a successful ISN reset via Tool32, you’ll need:
  • BMW Standard Tools suite (INPA, NCS Expert, WinKFP, Tool32)
  • A K+DCAN cable (for E-series) or ICOM interface (for wider compatibility)
  • Windows laptop with EDIABAS correctly configured
  • 13.8V regulated power supply (don't rely solely on the battery)
  • Correct EGS .PRG file (e.g., GS1912.prg for GA6HP26Z)
Pro Tip: Always confirm the correct .PRG file using INPA or BMW Scanner 1.4 to avoid loading the wrong control module.

✅ Step-by-Step: How to Reset BMW EGS ISN Using Tool32
1. Connect and Launch Tool32
  • Plug in your diagnostic interface (K+DCAN or ICOM).
  • Turn the ignition ON, engine OFF.
  • Launch Tool32.exe from your BMW Standard Tools installation.
2. Load the EGS Control Module
  • Go to File > Load SGBD, Group File.
  • Select the correct .PRG file based on your EGS type:
    • GA6HP19Z → GS19.0.prg, GS191.prg
    • GA6HP26Z → GS1912.prg
You’ll now see a list of all executable jobs for that module.
3. Execute the ISN Reset Job
Search for one of the following Tool32 jobs:
  • egers_nach_programmierung – EGS after programming
  • flash_isn_clear – only on supported firmware versions

These jobs reset the ISN and prepare the module for DME re-alignment.
  • Double-click the job.
  • Tool32 will return JOB_STATUS_OK if successful.
  • If the job fails or is grayed out, your EGS may be locked or unsupported for software reset.

Optional: Clear EGS Adaptations
After resetting the ISN, it’s best practice to also clear adaptations:
  • Run: steuern_lernwerte_loeschen – clears learned values
  • Run: steuern_reset_gesamt – performs full reset of the module

Aligning ISN with DME
Now that your EGS is “virgin,” you must align it with the engine ECU:
  • Use ISTA/D or a tool like BMW Explorer, AutoHex II, or CGDI BMW.
  • Navigate to the ISN adaptation function and synchronize the new EGS with your DME.
If not aligned, your car may crank but not start — or throw gear selector/immobilizer errors.

Common Pitfalls to Avoid Mistake
Solution
Using the wrong .PRG file
Always confirm your EGS type via VIN
Ignoring power supply needs
Use a regulated 13.8V supply
Forgetting adaptation reset
Clear values to prevent harsh shifting or learning issues
Assuming all EGS modules are resettable
Some require EEPROM-level tools
