How to Remove Oil and Grease Stains from Clothes

11/10/2023

If you’ve ever found yourself staring in despair at a fresh oil or grease stain on your favorite outfit, wondering if it’s doomed to be a lost cause, you’re not alone. Whether it's from a day tinkering with your car, a cooking mishap, or an unexpected spill, oil and grease stains are a common dilemma that many of us face. But fear not! I’m here to share some tried-and-true methods to get those pesky stains out of your clothes, making them look as good as new. Let's dive into the world of stain removal and turn those woes into wins!

1. The Magic of Mechanic’s Soap
First up, let’s talk about mechanic’s soap. This isn’t just great for cleaning up after a day in the garage; it’s also a secret weapon against tough stains on clothes. Here’s how to wield this magic:
  • Spread your stained garment on a flat surface, with a piece of cardboard or an old towel underneath the stained area.
  • Apply a dab of mechanic’s soap onto the grease mark. Give it a gentle but firm scrub to let the soap work its way into the fabric.
  • Let it sit for about 30 minutes. This gives the soap enough time to break down the oil or grease.
  • Wash it in your washing machine with your regular detergent. Check the care label for drying instructions, but air drying is a safe bet to ensure the stain is completely gone.

2. Dish Detergent: Not Just for Dishes!
Believe it or not, your dish detergent is a champion at cutting through grease not only on your plates but also on your clothes. The process is similar:
  • Place the garment on a flat surface and treat the stain with a small squirt of dish detergent.
  • Work the detergent into the stain gently with your fingers or a soft brush.
  • Let it sit for about 5 minutes, then wash as usual. You might want to hang dry the garment to check the stain’s status post-wash.

3. Baking Soda: The Household Hero
For those set-in stains that seem like they’ve claimed permanent residency on your clothing, baking soda is here to save the day:
  • Lay out the stained clothing and generously sprinkle baking soda over the grease stain.
  • Give it around 10 minutes; you’ll notice the baking soda changing color as it absorbs the grease.
  • Brush off the baking soda, then toss the garment in the wash. Repeat if necessary, but you’ll likely see great results on the first go!

4. Baby Powder: Gentle Yet Effective
Much like baking soda, baby powder can work wonders on fresh oil and grease spots:
  • Simply cover the stain with a liberal amount of baby powder and wait about 10 minutes.
  • The powder will help absorb the grease, making it easier to wash out.
  • Brush off the powder and then wash according to the fabric care instructions.

5. Cornstarch: The Kitchen Staple Turned Stain Fighter
Cornstarch is another kitchen staple that can tackle those stubborn stains:
  • Apply it just like you would baking soda or baby powder and let it sit.
  • After 15 minutes to an hour, depending on the severity of the stain, brush it off or wash directly.

6. Aloe Vera Gel: Nature’s Stain Remover
Aloe Vera isn’t just for sunburns; it can help with stains too!
  • Soak the stained part in hot water, then apply Aloe Vera gel.
  • Scrub gently, rinse in warm water, and air dry to check progress.

7. Brake Cleaner: The Heavy-Duty Option
A note of caution: brake cleaner is potent and should be used as a last resort on durable fabrics only.
  • Spray a little on the stain, scrub safely with a brush (not your hands!), and wash thoroughly afterward.

FAQs and Additional Tips
  • WD-40 on stains? It’s a trick you might hear about, but it can leave its own mark. Stick to the above methods for a less risky approach.
  • Act fast: The sooner you treat a stain, the better your chances of removing it.
  • Prevention is key: Wearing an apron or work clothes can save your favorite outfits from unexpected stains.

With these tips and tricks, oil and grease stains don’t stand a chance. Each method has its own set of fans, and you might find your go-to solution among them. Remember, tackling the stain as soon as you can and following the care instructions for your garment will give you the best shot at saying goodbye to those stubborn marks for good.

Happy cleaning, and here's to keeping your clothes looking their best!
