BMW head units have evolved significantly over the past decade—from the CIC in early E-series vehicles to the MGU platform used in today’s G-series cars. As more technicians and retrofitters work with head unit firmware and advanced features, accessing SSH (Secure Shell) has become a critical step for diagnostics, coding, and system-level customization.​

Why SSH Access Matters on BMW Head Units
SSH access allows direct communication with the internal Linux-based operating system of your head unit. With it, you can:

• Analyze system logs
• Modify configuration files
• Backup or patch system data
• Perform advanced coding or unlocks

However, SSH ports are not always open by default—especially on newer systems like NBT Evo and MGU, which include stricter security protocols.

Tools & Requirements
Before diving into Tool32, make sure you’ve got the following setup:
✅ Essentials:

• Tool32 (part of Ediabas/INPA software suite)
• Proper Interface Cable:
  • ENET for F/G-Series (NBT, NBT Evo, MGU)
  • K+DCAN for E-Series (CIC)
• EDIABAS Configuration (correct .INI files for your setup)
• Vehicle in Diagnostic Mode (Ignition ON, terminal 15)
• Basic Knowledge of ECUs and PRG Files

Step-by-Step: Open or Close SSH Port via Tool32
1. Open Tool32

• Launch Tool32.exe
• Load the correct PRG file based on your HU

2. Find SSH-Related Commands
Look for the following job names:

​3. Open SSH (Enable Port 22)

• Double-click steuern_ssh_aktivieren
• Leave parameters empty (or enter 0, depending on PRG)
• Wait for success message (OKAY or no error)

4. Verify SSH Access

• Run status_ssh
• It should return something like aktiv (active)

You can now use PuTTY or an SSH terminal to connect to the head unit, typically at:

IP: 192.168.92.3
Port: 22
​Username: root / user (varies)

5. Close SSH When Done (Optional)To secure the system again:

• Run steuern_ssh_deaktivieren
• Confirm status with status_ssh

Important Notes by HU Platform
CIC (E-Series)

• SSH is often accessible by default or can be enabled easily.
• Passwords may still require a known exploit or patch.

NBT (F-Series)

• May need FSC injector or software patch for full root access.
• SSH toggle works well in Tool32.

NBT Evo (F/G-Series)

• SSH is usually disabled at boot unless patched.
• May require USB patch or token-based launcher unlocks.

MGU (G-Series)

• Highly secured with encrypted bootloader.
• SSH toggle might be disabled in production software.
• Requires dev firmware or signed FSC unlock for access.
