How to Manually Calibrate Headlight Leveling (LWR) After Xenon
Upgrading your vehicle’s lighting system to Xenon or LED headlights can dramatically improve visibility and driving safety. However, once you retrofit these advanced headlights, the factory leveling system — known as LWR (Leuchtweitenregulierung) — needs precise calibration to ensure your lights aim correctly and don’t dazzle other drivers.
If you’re a professional technician or a dedicated DIY car enthusiast looking to master the manual LWR adaptation process after a Xenon or LED retrofit, this detailed guide will walk you through every step using two essential tools: ESYS and Tool32.
What is LWR and Why Does It Matter After a Retrofit?
The LWR system automatically adjusts the vertical angle of your headlights based on vehicle load and driving conditions. Retrofitting Xenon or LED lights alters the headlight assembly’s mechanics and electronics, requiring the LWR system to relearn its baseline positions and operating parameters.
Failing to recalibrate can lead to uneven beam patterns, poor road illumination, and dangerous glare for oncoming traffic—something every responsible driver wants to avoid.

Tools You Need
  • ESYS software: A coding and diagnostic tool mainly used for BMWs but adaptable to other VW Group vehicles.
  • Tool32: A powerful utility for sending manual commands and running adaptations inside the ECU.
  • OBD-II Cable: ENET cable for BMW, VCP or VCDS cable for VW/Audi.
  • Vehicle with retrofit Xenon or LED headlights installed.

Step-by-Step Guide to Manual LWR Calibration
1. Connect and Prepare ESYS
  • Launch ESYS and connect your cable to the vehicle’s OBD port.
  • Load your vehicle’s ECU data by entering the VIN or selecting the FA (Vehicle Order).
  • Read coding data from the headlight control module (usually labeled J431 or similar).
2. Launch Tool32 and Load ECU Script
  • Open Tool32 and load the corresponding .t32 script for the headlight module (J431.t32 or equivalent).
  • Establish a connection with the ECU through Tool32 to prepare for command execution.
3. Trigger LWR Adaptation
  • Use Tool32’s command interface to execute the LWR adaptation function. Typical commands include:

    CALL C_EXECUTE_METHOD('doAdaptation', 0) or
  • CALL C_LWR_ADAPT()
  • Wait patiently as the ECU processes the adaptation. This step lets the module relearn the correct vertical positioning of your new headlights.
4. Verify and Save Results in ESYS
  • Return to ESYS and re-read the coding and adaptation blocks.
  • Confirm that the LWR values reflect updated parameters and that no errors related to leveling are present.
5. Physical Testing
  • Turn on the headlights and adjust the LWR switch inside the car.
  • Confirm the headlights move smoothly up and down.
  • Test on various inclines to ensure the system automatically compensates correctly.

Pro Tips for a Smooth LWR Adaptation
  • Always perform adaptations with ignition ON, engine OFF.
  • Make sure the LWR motors and sensors are properly connected and functional.
  • If using LED retrofit kits with integrated sensors, additional coding may be necessary to ensure proper communication with the ECU.
  • Consult specific ECU and module documentation for command variations depending on model and year.

Why Mastering LWR Adaptation Matters
Doing your own Xenon or LED retrofit is cost-effective and rewarding but skipping or improperly performing LWR calibration can compromise your upgrade's safety and effectiveness. Understanding how to manually perform this critical step using ESYS and Tool32 sets you apart as a knowledgeable enthusiast or technician, ensuring professional-quality results every time.
