Your BMW’s KAFAS (Camera-Assisted Driver Assistance System) keeps you safe—with lane-departure alerts and high-beam control that respond to what’s ahead. But if you replace the windshield, change tire size, or carry out suspension mods, the KAFAS camera may lose its proper alignment. That can trigger warnings or system malfunction. Calibration via ISTA gets everything aligned and working smoothly again.
​Before you start: prerequisites (don’t skip)
  1. Battery support: Connect a stable power supply per BMW workshop spec (don’t calibrate on a weak battery). 
  2. Level surface & straight-ahead steering: Park on a flat bay, center the steering wheel, verify alignment isn’t wildly out.
  3. Correct tires & pressures: Use BMW-approved sizes; set pressures to door-jamb spec. Non-approved sizes can affect ADAS operation. 
  4. Clean glass & camera window: No stickers, residue, or dirt around the camera. Check the camera bracket/hood for damage or mis-seating. 
  5. Code/program first (if applicable): If you just replaced the module/windshield or updated software, complete any required coding/programming and clear all related faults before calibration. 
  6. Road & weather plan: For dynamic calibration you’ll need clear lane markings, daylight or good lighting, and a short highway stretch at steady speed. Calibration time can vary and some functions may be limited until it completes. 

Tools & software
  • ISTA+ (Rheingold) with valid connection (ICOM/ENET as appropriate).
  • BMW-approved charger/power supply
  • ADAS target frame/board (only for models/repairs that require static KAFAS calibration—see ISTA prompts).

Step-by-step: KAFAS calibration in ISTAStep 1 — Vehicle test & fault triage
  1. Launch ISTA, run a full vehicle test, and read out KAFAS fault memory.
  2. Fix what ISTA tells you first (voltage faults, camera communication errors, bracket/hood issues).
  3. Clear faults and re-run vehicle test.
    • Typical calibration-related entries you may see include “calibration unsuccessful” events (e.g., 0x800AC4) or messages indicating the system needs calibration after glass work. 
Step 2 — Select the correct service function
  1. In ISTA, go to Service functions → Driver assistance systems → KAFAS / Front camera.
  2. Choose Calibration / Teach-in (wording can vary by I-Level and KAFAS generation).
  3. Read the on-screen prerequisites and confirm each one (voltage, tire size, clean windshield, etc.). 
Step 3 — Choose calibration mode (dynamic vs. static)
  • Dynamic calibration (most BMW cases):
    ISTA starts a guided procedure that completes while driving. You’ll need a short, steady drive with visible lane markings. Some driver-assist features can be limited until the teach-in finishes. 
  • Static calibration (model-specific):
    If ISTA instructs static calibration (certain KAFAS4 or collision repairs), set up the OEM-spec target on a level floor using the measurements shown on-screen. Follow ISTA precisely for stand distance/height and camera aiming steps. (If ISTA doesn’t ask for targets, you’re dynamic.) 
Step 4 — Perform the calibration
For dynamic:
  1. Start the calibration/teach-in in ISTA.
  2. Road test on a straight, well-marked road at steady speed as instructed by ISTA until it reports completion.
  3. Do not interrupt power during the process; keep the charger connected. 
For static:
  1. Set the vehicle to ride height on a level bay.
  2. Position the target board/stand exactly per the dimensions shown in ISTA (distance, height, centerline).
  3. Run the static adjust routine; ISTA will confirm when aiming meets tolerance. 
Step 5 — Post-calibration checks
  1. End the service function and clear any residual faults.
  2. Lock the car and let it sleep for a few minutes if ISTA/repair instructions call for it. 
  3. Perform a final road test: verify Lane Departure Warning, Traffic Sign/Speed Limit Info, High-Beam Assistant and any Assisted Driving features are behaving normally. 

Troubleshooting: quick answers to real issues
  • “Calibration unsuccessful” keeps returning (e.g., 0x800AC4):
    Double-check camera seating/hood/bracket, glass type, and that the windshield bracket isn’t deformed. Refit or replace trim/bracket as needed and repeat calibration. 
  • Functions limited even after calibration started:
    That’s normal while calibration completes. Some BMW guidance notes calibration can be lengthy and features may be temporarily limited during the process. 
  • Windshield replaced, but shop skipped calibration:
    BMW requires starting calibration via the diagnostic system after glass work. If skipped, expect warnings or misbehavior. Run the ISTA service function and complete the drive/target steps as instructed. 
  • Wrong tires/wheel sizes:
    Non-approved sizes can impact ADAS performance. Install approved sizes and recalibrate. 

Pro tips 
  • Do coding/programming first. Calibrating a camera on old software or with open faults is a time sink. 
  • Chase the basics. Most failures are glass contamination, a mis-seated camera hood, or poor lane markings during the drive. 
  • Plan your route. A single loop with consistent lane paint saves you time on dynamic calibrations (ISTAs prompts will guide the drive).
