The way your car responds to your accelerator pedal isn’t just about pressing down and going faster—it’s a sophisticated process controlled by the engine control unit (ECU).
Understanding how fuel requests work in modern vehicles can help you appreciate the precision behind your car’s performance.

What Is an External Fuel Request?
An external fuel request refers to the process where the driver or a system like cruise control dictates how much fuel the engine should receive. This request is determined based on how much pressure is applied to the accelerator pedal or the speed setting of cruise control.

1. Fuel Request via the Accelerator Pedal
When you press the accelerator pedal, the ECU calculates the required fuel based on two main factors:
  • Pedal Position (% Pressed): The more you press, the higher the fuel request.
  • Engine Speed (RPM): The ECU optimizes fuel delivery based on the engine’s speed.
To achieve this, the ECU uses predefined maps known as Driver Wish Maps. These maps convert the electrical signal from the accelerator pedal sensor (a potentiometer) into a specific fuel injection quantity. Essentially, your foot’s movement directly influences how much fuel the engine receives, ensuring smooth acceleration.

2. Fuel Request via Cruise Control
