Diesel particulate filters (DPFs) are critical for reducing emissions and keeping modern diesel engines compliant with environmental regulations. However, when your vehicle’s dashboard flashes warnings like “Diesel particulate filter malfunction” or “Drive system malfunction,” it’s more than just an annoyance—it’s a sign your engine isn’t running efficiently, and emissions may be dangerously high.
When the engine jerks or lacks power across the rev range, or the emissions warning light (MIL) illuminates, it often points to a clogged DPF. This clogging prevents the filter from regenerating, which is the process that burns off accumulated soot.
Common error codes in the system include:
  • F/G Models: 244A00, 244C00, 25DA00, 245700, 245800, 290B00
  • E Models: 4530, 429A, 480A, 481A, 3FF0, 40D4
Why these errors appear:
Short trips or frequent stop-and-go driving are the most common culprits. The exhaust doesn’t reach the high temperatures needed for regeneration, causing soot to build up faster than it can be burned off.

Common Causes of DPF Regeneration Failure
Several system faults can prevent DPF regeneration. Understanding these helps you target the issue correctly:
  1. Excessive exhaust back pressure – When soot blocks the DPF, back pressure rises, and the vehicle’s system disables regeneration to protect the filter.
  2. Faulty air or fuel systems – Incorrect air-fuel mixture can cause incomplete combustion, leading to more soot.
  3. Cooling system issues – Problems with engine coolant thermostats or the exhaust gas cooler (EGR) can stop the engine from reaching regeneration temperature.
  4. Driving profile – Frequent short trips prevent proper filter cleaning.
Important note:
DPF regeneration is blocked when error codes 480A, 481A, 245700, or 245800 are present. Attempting forced regeneration without addressing these issues can damage the filter permanently.

Specific Engine Considerations
For MX7 / NX7 engines:
  • Malfunctions in the engine cooling system often trigger error codes and prevent periodic regeneration.
  • The automatic transmission oil-engine coolant heat exchanger has an integrated thermostat; if defective, it blocks regeneration.
Testing the heat exchanger:
  • Follow PuMA measure 14229821: “Engine barely reaches operating temperature / only very late.”
Additional systems to check:
  • Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR)
  • Turbocharger control valves
  • Air mass measurement systems
  • Vacuum systems
All these components must function correctly to allow successful DPF regeneration.

How to Identify a Full Diesel Particulate Filter
The most common error codes indicating a full DPF:
  • E Models: 480A, 481A
  • F/G Models: 245700, 245800
Signs include:
  • Engine losing power
  • Jerking during acceleration
  • Emissions warning light (MIL) on
Regular diagnostics and checking your vehicle’s error log can help prevent complete DPF failure.

Professional DPF Cleaning Solutions
If your DPF is clogged, using a high-quality professional cleaner can restore its function. One of the top-rated solutions is:
LIQUI MOLY 5169 Pro-Line Diesel Particulate Filter Cleaner (1L)
Instructions for use:
  1. Pour the cleaner directly into the fuel tank before refueling.
  2. Drive normally until the tank is empty, allowing the additive to circulate and burn accumulated soot during combustion.
  3. Follow with a long drive at high RPM to ensure complete regeneration.
This treatment helps dissolve soot and ash deposits safely without removing the filter, saving time and money.

Preventing DPF Clogging
Prevention is always better than cure. Here’s how to keep your DPF in top condition:
  • Avoid frequent short trips; allow the engine to reach operating temperature.
  • Monitor engine error codes regularly.
  • Keep air, fuel, and cooling systems maintained.
  • Use high-quality diesel fuel and periodic DPF additives.
By following these steps, you can extend the life of your DPF and maintain optimal engine performance.

Real-Life Experience
Many workshop technicians report that vehicles with frequent urban stop-and-go driving or poorly maintained cooling systems are most prone to DPF failure. Simple maintenance, like cleaning EGR valves, ensuring proper coolant flow, and checking turbochargers, often prevents expensive DPF replacements.
