Compressed Natural Gas Fuel: A Cleaner Alternative to LPG
As the world strives to find more environmentally friendly fuel options, vehicles powered by natural gas, electricity, or hydrogen have gained significant attention. Among these alternatives, Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) stands out as a highly profitable and eco-friendly choice when compared to LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas).
CNG Benefits and Differences with LPG
When comparing the cost, CNG proves to be a more cost-effective option, being nearly half the price of LPG. Just like LPG, CNG can be used to power gasoline vehicles. For instance, the Ankara Municipality has embraced CNG-powered buses to reduce environmental impact, featuring conspicuous white CNG tanks on these eco-friendly vehicles.
CNG is composed of methane gas, similar to the natural gas used in homes, featuring a structure with four hydrogen atoms attached to one carbon atom. On the other hand, LPG contains a mixture of various hydrocarbons, leading to the release of higher amounts of carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide into the atmosphere during combustion. As CNG doesn't undergo oil-based processing like LPG, it emerges as a more affordable and cleaner fuel option.
Converting Gasoline Vehicles to CNG
The conversion process from gasoline to CNG for vehicles is similar to the steps followed for LPG, though the properties of CNG differ. To convert a vehicle to run on CNG, the necessary components include a fuel tank, injectors to deliver the gas to the engine, a control unit for seamless regulation, and a pressure regulator to ensure the engine receives gas at a reduced pressure. This conversion is particularly effective for heavy vehicles, promoting environmental health and engine longevity.
One of the major advantages of CNG lies in its high octane rating. Its ability to withstand compression better enables the engine to utilize more of the gas, resulting in increased efficiency and reduced fuel consumption. Additionally, CNG has a higher combustion temperature compared to gasoline, reducing the risk of spontaneous combustion at high engine temperatures.
Potential Disadvantages of CNG
While CNG offers numerous advantages, it also has some drawbacks. Unlike LPG, which can liquefy at lower pressures, storing CNG requires special considerations due to its gaseous state. Though this may not be a significant issue for heavy vehicles, it can present challenges for regular ones with limited storage space. To address this, CNG needs to be liquefied by cooling it to -160 degrees, necessitating specialized equipment with a larger area. While CNG is becoming more popular, it's essential to note that not all fuel stations have this option yet.
