C0000 Code Diagnose & Fix Power Steering Circuit Issues
If your car’s diagnostic scanner has flagged the C0000 code, it’s time to dig deeper into your vehicle’s electronic power steering system. This code indicates an issue with the vehicle speed information circuit, which the Power Steering Control Module (PSCM) relies on to determine the appropriate level of steering assist. Without this input, your steering could become stiff and unresponsive, making driving unsafe.
The C0000 code signals that the PSCM isn’t receiving a valid vehicle speed signal from the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) through the serial data circuit. This disruption prevents the PSCM from calculating the appropriate steering assist.

What Causes the C0000 Code?
Here are the common culprits behind this issue:
  1. Faulty PSCM – The control module for the power steering system may be malfunctioning.
  2. Faulty PCM – The main powertrain control module could be failing to send the required speed data.
  3. Damaged Wiring – Broken, corroded, or loose wires and connectors in the circuit can disrupt communication.
  4. Electrical Issues – Blown fuses or faulty relays may cut off power to the PSCM or PCM.
  5. Poor Connections – Corrosion or loose connections can lead to data transmission failures.

Symptoms of the C0000 Code
Look out for these warning signs in your car:
  • Check Engine Light – The warning light will illuminate.
  • Loss of Steering Assist – Steering may feel stiff or heavy.
  • ABS Warning Light – A malfunction in related systems may trigger this light.
  • Reduced Turning Radius – Your car may have difficulty making sharp turns.
  • Malfunctioning Speedometer – An inconsistent or failing speedometer could accompany this issue.

How to Diagnose the C0000 Code
Here’s how you can pinpoint the problem:
  1. Scan for Codes
    • Use an OBD-II scanner to check for stored codes in both the PCM and PSCM.
    • If you detect related codes like C0035 or C0040, resolve those first.
  2. Live Data Analysis
    • Compare vehicle speed data from the PCM and PSCM. If the values are inconsistent or missing, it indicates a communication failure.
  3. Inspect Wiring and Connectors
    • Use the wiring diagram to trace the vehicle speed information circuit.
    • Check for physical damage, corrosion, or loose connections.
  4. Test Fuses and Relays
    • Examine fuses and relays supplying power to the PSCM and PCM. Replace if necessary.
  5. Rule Out Hardware Issues
    • If no external issues are found, the PCM or PSCM may be defective.

How to Fix the C0000 Code

Follow these steps to resolve the issue:
1. Repair Wiring or Connections
  • Fix any damaged or corroded wiring.
  • Tighten loose connectors and clean corroded terminals.
2. Replace Fuses or Relays
  • Install new fuses or relays to restore power.
3. Replace Faulty Modules (As a Last Resort)If the PCM or PSCM is the root cause, replace the faulty module:
  1. Disconnect the Battery
    • Wait 10 minutes to deactivate the airbag system.
  2. Remove the Module
    • Detach connectors and remove mounting bolts.
  3. Install the New Module
    • Attach connectors and secure the module.
  4. Program the Module
    • Use a scan tool to input the VIN and other settings.

Preventing Future C0000 Issues
  • Regularly inspect and maintain your vehicle’s wiring harness.
  • Address warning lights promptly to prevent compounding issues.
  • Ensure your car’s software is up-to-date.
