  • Intake manifold pressure
  • Air mass (HFM)
  • Oxygen sensor feedback
  • Boost pressure
If the calculated airflow does not match the measured pressure values, the DME flags fault 28A0.

Common Symptoms of the 28A0 Fault
In many cases the vehicle behaves normally, which makes diagnosis confusing.
Typical symptoms include:
  • Engine warning light illuminated
  • Slight vibration at idle
  • Normal power during driving
  • Stored mixture faults
  • Occasional lean mixture codes
  • Unstable intake air readings
Because power often remains normal, this fault can persist for long periods before being repaired.

Fault Codes Often Found with 28A0
The 28A0 fault rarely appears alone. It frequently occurs with other related faults such as:
Mixture and airflow faults
  • 2BC0 – mixture too lean
  • 2BEA – mixture deviation too large
Catalyst related faults

  • Boost pressure too high

  • Intake air volume
Normal Reference Value
At 650 RPM idle, the N55 intake airflow should be approximately:
13 – 15 kg/h
If measured airflow is significantly lower than actual airflow entering the engine, the DME calculations will be incorrect and the fault appears.

A vehicle arrived with the following stored faults:
  • 2BC0 – mixture too lean
  • 2BEA – mixture deviation too large
  • 28A0 – intake pressure comparison fault

Possible Causes of Leakage After the Throttle Body

  1. Fuel tank vent valve malfunction
  2. Intake manifold leak
  3. Damaged throttle body gasket

  6. Engine sealing problems
Many technicians overlook crankcase ventilation issues, but they are one of the most frequent causes.

Crankcase Ventilation System and the N55 Engine
The N55 uses a sophisticated crankcase ventilation system that routes gases from the crankcase back into the intake manifold.
When the system leaks or loses pressure balance, unmetered air enters the intake, which causes:
  • Lean mixture
  • Incorrect airflow calculation
  • Intake pressure mismatch
This directly triggers fault 28A0.

Testing for Engine Internal Leaks
The N55 crankcase ventilation system behaves differently depending on engine state:
Engine stopped
Pressure regulating valve is open.
Engine idling or coasting
Pressure valve closes.
Engine under load
Valve enters regulation mode.
To test internal leakage:
  1. Apply pressure to the crankcase ventilation diaphragm.
  2. This temporarily blocks airflow between crankcase and intake manifold.

After pressurizing the crankcase ventilation system, airflow values immediately returned to normal.

Rear crankshaft oil seal leaking
Once the seal was replaced:
  • Airflow readings stabilized
  • Mixture faults disappeared
  • Fault code 28A0 was permanently resolved

28A0 Fault with Low Catalytic Efficiency
Another common scenario includes catalyst efficiency faults.
Diagnostic steps:
1. Check for engine misfires
Misfires can damage the catalytic converter and trigger efficiency errors.
2. Measure exhaust back pressure
At 2500 RPM, normal back pressure should be:
Less than 17.24 kPa
If pressure reaches:
20.7 kPa or higher
the exhaust system is likely restricted.
Testing can be done by connecting a pressure gauge to:
  • Secondary air injection valve
  • Front oxygen sensor port

3. Infrared temperature testing
Measure catalyst temperature before and after the converter.

Sometimes the vehicle stores only the 28A0 fault with no other errors.
Symptoms may include:
  • Idle stable
  • No power loss
  • Engine warning light on
Diagnostic steps
  1. Observe engine startup behavior.
    If RPM jumps from 500 to 1000 rpm, then drops quickly, it may trigger the fault.
  2. Inspect throttle body and intake valves for carbon buildup.
  3. Check intake air volume in live data.
Typical abnormal readings fluctuate between:
17 – 22 kg/h
  1. Clear adaptation values and recheck data.
  2. Update the DME software if needed.
  3. Temporarily disconnect the carbon canister purge valve hose.
If airflow drops by around 2 kg/h, the purge system may be influencing the fault.
After clearing faults and reconnecting the system, the engine may return to normal idle behavior.
