BMW N47 Clutch Jerking Fix
If you're a BMW owner or technician dealing with a strange jerking of the clutch in engines like the N47, N47S, or N47T, particularly in the speed range of 900 to 1300 RPM, you're not alone. This issue can appear whether the engine is warm or cold, causing a frustrating driving experience. But don't worry—there's a solution. In this blog post, we’ll walk through everything you need to know to diagnose and fix this problem once and for all.
Common Symptoms:
  • Clutch jerking between 900 and 1300 RPM
  • Jerking occurs both in cold and warm engine conditions
  • Especially noticeable during start-up

Preliminary Checks
Before diving into more complex solutions, it’s important to ensure that all the usual suspects have been ruled out. Here are some steps that should be taken first:
  1. Check Engine or Gearbox Bearings: If the bearings are worn or damaged, they can cause instability and affect clutch performance. Replace them if needed.
  2. Inspect the Clutch for Wear or Oil Contamination: A worn or oily clutch can lead to poor engagement and jerking. If you notice signs of wear or oil, replace the clutch immediately.
  3. Check the Release System: Look for signs of uneven operation or mechanical wear. Replace any parts that don’t appear to be functioning smoothly.
  4. Check for Fluid Leaks: Inspect the engine’s radial shaft seal, gearbox input shaft, and clutch slave cylinder for leaks. If any leaks are detected, repair or replace the necessary parts.
  5. Examine the Dual Mass Flywheel (DMF): The DMF helps reduce vibration, and a malfunctioning one can contribute to clutch issues. If necessary, replace it.
  6. Remove the Throttle Valve: Throttle valve issues can impact engine performance and contribute to jerking. Clean or replace if necessary.

If you’ve completed all of these checks and the issue persists, it’s time to dive into the more technical solution, which addresses a unique clutch plucking error related to the software version of the vehicle’s I-level.

Advanced Solution: Program the Vehicle to I-Level 12-03-500 or Higher
BMW has recognized that, in some cases, the clutch jerking issue can be related to the I-level software in the car. If your vehicle’s I-level is below 12-03-500, it’s recommended that you update it to 12-03-500 or a higher version.

This programming update modifies the vehicle’s start-up behavior to increase the engine speed during takeoff, specifically when certain conditions are met. The goal is to prevent the engine from operating within the resonance frequency that causes the jerking.
Here’s how it works:
  1. Steering Angle: The system will only adjust the starting speed if the steering angle is less than 150 degrees.
  2. Load Requirement: There needs to be a load of more than 50Nm, which is typical when starting on an incline or carrying extra weight.
  3. Accelerator Pedal: The accelerator pedal must be pressed at least 10% for the speed adjustment to occur.
  4. Speed Under 5 km/h: The vehicle must be moving at less than 5 km/h for the change to take effect.
  5. Clutch Pedal Engagement: Finally, the clutch pedal must be fully depressed for the system to modify the engine speed.

Depending on the engine variant (N47, N47S, or N47T), the system will increase the start-up speed in a specific way to avoid the drive train's resonance frequency, which is the root cause of the clutch jerking issue.

Why This Matters
Updating the vehicle’s I-level software is a crucial step for two reasons:
  1. Resonance Frequency Elimination: By adjusting the engine’s start-up speed, the vehicle avoids running at the frequency where the clutch jerking occurs.
  2. Smoother Start-Up: Drivers will notice a smoother transition when taking off from a stop, especially in challenging conditions like hills or carrying heavy loads.

If you’ve checked all the usual mechanical suspects and the clutch jerking problem in your BMW N47, N47S, or N47T engine persists, updating the I-level to 12-03-500 or higher could be the answer. This programming update is designed to optimize the engine's start-up speed, preventing the drive train from operating within the resonance frequency that causes jerking.
