BMW DKG GS7D36SG ISN Reset with Tool32 – Full Professional Guide

Resetting the ISN (Individual Serial Number) in the BMW GS7D36SG dual-clutch transmission is a critical task when replacing, cloning, or matching a used DKG to a different DME/ECU. This transmission is commonly found in BMW F-series M-models with the 7-speed DCT, and syncing it properly is essential for correct operation.
What is ISN and Why It Matters
The ISN is a unique digital handshake between the engine control unit (DME) and the transmission (EGS/GS). If these numbers don’t match, the vehicle may not shift, or in some cases, may not start at all. This security mechanism prevents module theft and unauthorized pairing.

When installing a used GS7D36SG DKG, you must either:
  • Extract and match the original ISN from the DME, or
  • Reset the DKG’s ISN so it can accept a new one.

Tools and Requirements
Before diving into the process, make sure you have the following:
  • ✅ BMW Standard Tools (Tool32, INPA)
  • ✅ ENET or K+DCAN cable (F-Series typically uses ENET)
  • ✅ Stable 12V power supply for the vehicle
  • ✅ Known DME ISN (extracted via AutoHex, CGDI, BMW Explorer, etc.)
  • ✅ Virgin or used GS7D36SG that supports ISN reset

Step-by-Step: ISN Reset for GS7D36SG DKG with Tool32
1. Open Tool32 and Load PRG File
  • Launch Tool32.exe
  • Load the PRG file: GS7D36SG.prg
  • Confirm connection with the module via the job list.
2. Check the Current ISN
  • Run the job: steuern_lesen_isn
  • Result:
    • If ISN is shown (non-zero), it’s already coded.
    • If ISN is 0000000000000000, the unit is virgin.
3. Reset the ISN
  • Run the job: steuern_reset_isn
  • This command clears the current ISN and sets the DKG into a learning state.
4. Write the New ISN
  • You now have two options:
    • Automatic sync (only possible if using the original ECU and FEM/BDC):
      • Cycle ignition OFF → ON
      • Run: steuern_abgleichen_isn_dme
    • Manual entry:
      • Run: steuern_schreiben_isn
      • Enter the exact 8-byte ISN (HEX format) from the DME.
      • Example: 1A2B3C4D5E6F7A8B
Tip: ISNs are typically 8 bytes for DME MEVD17 and vary slightly across models. Always confirm the length and format before writing.
5. Verify the Operation
  • Run: steuern_lesen_isn again to confirm.
  • A successful write will display the new ISN and allow proper DKG-DME handshake.
