Electric Waterpump Management
The DME controls the electric waterpump according to engine requirements, engine temperature and outside temperature. The waterpump can also be switched off under certain circumstances as during warm-up phase.
It is also possible to influence fuel consumption and power output by controlling the cooling system. The electric waterpump also facilitates the warm-up time of the engine without having to circulate coolant.
It also continues to run after the engine is shutoff to dissipate the residual heat from the engine. This is helpful on the N54 engine, wheir the turbochargers are concerned, the engine can now be shutoff without having to let the engine idle for several minutes before it is shutdown.
The advantages to using an electric waterpump are:
The electric waterpump is also diagnosable via fault codes stored in the DME.

The advantages to using an electric waterpump are:
- Reduced warm-up time
- Reduced fuel consumption
- Reduced emissions
- Cooling controlled independantly of engine speed
- Heat is available to the passengers sooner
- Heat dissipation more efficient with pump run-on after the engine is switched off
- Engine power isnt used to operated waterpump
